California's scenic and iconic Highway 1 is closed in both directions south of Big Sur because of a rockslide, according to the California Department of Transportation.

The highway is closed at Limekiln Creek, about 2 miles south of the town of Lucia, but north of Hearst Castle/San Simeon.

There is no time set for reopening. Work crews will evaluate the situation today.

US 101 is the best alternate route.
