Heading to Tuscany in May. Does anyone recommend
About six years ago we stayed at the gorgeous Luxury Resort Hotel in Tuscany | Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa near Barga in the heart of Tuscany. This property came highly recommended by very well respected and fellow Insiders fschumpert and ssindc. It did not disappoint at all. Here are some threads on the resort plus Part 4 of our trip across Italy. If you pick Part 3 you'll get our photos and information about the resort. Unfortunately I believe we lost most all of if not all of the photos ssindc posted, maybe he can link them up for you to review.
And a couple of years ago yet another well respected Insider pluto77 visited the resort and Barga and her is the review she put together.
Bottom line, maybe not the location you're seeking just a very special spot to check out if it fits with your plans. Keep us posted on your travel plans as there are excellent experienced travelers here.
Big Picture (no pun intended): I'm all in with iahflyr - my family (and friends) LOVE the Il Ciocco, and we had a great trip there (and enjoyed our extended three-room stay)....
If you're willing to do a little extra effort, you can click through my (dis-aggregated) photo gallery - one shot at a time - here: Italy, Tuscany - Il Ciocco, Barga, Cinque Terre, Florence, Lucca, Pisa [for newer Insiders, there used to be a photo gallery feature, but it died in one of the web page update/upgrades (ah, the price of progress), rendering the old galleries, um, largely useless]....
Oh man, thanks for sending me on a stroll down memory lane. What a great, great trip that was. I'm ready to cancel my 7 night cat 4 cert for Paris in April and swap it out for - Barga!
Thanks for the reference!
As a reminder, you can drive from Florence train station, or airport, or from Pisa. There is no train station near the Ciocco, except for Gallicano, about 10 miles from the resort. To enjoy the area, I'd definitely recommend renting a car.
Also, when you make reservations, I'd recommend requesting a balcony room overlooking the Serchio Valley, and town of Barga in distance.
Another thumbs up for the Renaissance II Ciocco. We stayed there in 2013 and the hotel was fantastic. Rented a car and used it as a mini base to explore the area. The town of Lucca was so quaint.
We stayed at The Westin in Florence (assume you’re asking about Florence) and it’s wonderful. Included platinum/titanium breakfast, room with river view, great staff and excellent location. You’ll be very happy with this choice.
We stayed at the Sina in Florence 18 months ago and loved it. I was staying on points and upgraded to a lovely large corner room with wraparound balcony overlooking the pool/courtyard area. Platinums and Titaniums have access to the full breakfast buffet (including Prosecco!) The staff at the hotel were really knowledgeable, professional, etc. The small bar off the lobby has a "buy 2 get 3 glasses of wine" for happy hour. I would say the Westin is in a better location, overlooking the river and closer to sight-seeing. However, given how well we were treated at the Sina, I would have no hesitation going back there.
