What is best Marriott affiliate to stay at in Venice before a cruise?
We have stayed at Grand Dei Dogi (on point) twice and will stay again on our next visit. Historic property with unique rooms, nice ground, great breakfast for Titanium/Platinum and friendly helpful staff. We used private transportation to cruise terminal, not cheap but it was vacation so what the heck.
Unfortunately, since the city has restricted cruise ships to disembark at Piazza San Marco, they now park at a rather remote port, and I don't think there are many (no Marriotts) near this part of Venice. The closest Marriott properties would be the AC (near the train station), and the former Autograph, now the Grand Dei Dogi, as mentioned, and pictured below, is where I normally stay when visiting Venice. The hotel can arrange for public water transportation (ActV, Vaporetta) to/from the boat, as well as free transportation to/from San Marco.
If you're arriving in Venice at Marco Polo Airport, you can catch public transport (Alliguna) to the Madonna del Orto port, which is within five minute walk to the hotel. If you're like me, wanting to plan as much as possible ahead of time, you might want to contact the Dei Dogi via fax - 39-041-722278 and ask what's best way (and costs) for travel to/from cruise line to the hotel.
