Need advice if MB is able to do a status match with IHG Spire Elite. Appreciate all your advice!
I don’t think Marriott status matches, indeed as far as I recall it never really did other than status promos.
Certainly I wouldn’t expect a great deal of leverage from IHG Spire - it’s 75,000 base point earning criteria makes it pretty easy to achieve! And I say that as a Marriotteer who had to maintain Marriott Plat by carrying the credit card and staying 65 nights butt-in-bed. Conversely carrying the IHG card and staying 30 nights usually does Spire!
Having said that Bonvoy does offer status challenges, I think it’s 18 nights in 3 months for Titanium so you could certainly ring the Bonvoy line...
How about IHG Spire Elite in ZERO stays, or 6-8 stays, without a status match (and also potentially without the IHG credit card)?
Also, there is no Titanium challenge, it's only up to Platinum - https://insiders.marriott.com/message/270993?commentID=270993#comment-270993
Tip: Register for the challenge on the 2nd day of the month, you'll get the rest of that month plus 3 months to complete the challenge.
Oh, yes, unlike Bonvoy Titanium, the IHG 75-night level (Spire) can be achieved without spending a night in one of their hotels! Just spend £37,500 on the credit card over a year to earn the 75,000 elite qualifying points. Equally, if you can stay at the few properties that offer the 10,000 bonus points per stay it’s again possible to do it in probably 7 nights, or less depending upon how high the rate is. It’s al about getting those 75,000 qualifying points. Naturally Hilton’s top tier, Diamond which is set at an easier 60 nights, can be done just by being American and getting their $450 AMEX - Abracadabra - instant Hilton Diamond! The card itself comes with $250 airline credit and $250 Hilton Resort credit so you can get the initial fee back, although I’d imagine you’ll need to be staying at a Hilton Resort to use the resort credit, so I guess staying is required.
Anyhow, i accede to your other point - Bonvoy doesn’t do Titanium challenges but the Plat challenge is 16 nights in 3 months, plus the month of registration, so if you register early in the month you cover almost 4 months to complete it...
Fortunately, there are two 10k/night point IHG hotels in areas I go to, so 6 or 7 nights a year works! I don't really evaluate the rate anymore (as it's been reasonable), because it'd cost more to do 2 nights almost anywhere else to get 1/2 of the points and would cost the same (if not more) than the one 10k point night!
You can also hold events at IHG hotels, and you can sometimes catch those on double/triple points offers. So a fairly minimal effort to have a Bonvoy backup that is 'serviceable' works for me. I think I already have 4 10k nights planned for next year, so also using the card should yield roughly 50k points. I may be able to do it in 2020 with 6 nights!
Ah, you see I do evaluate the underlying value on IHGs members bonus points rates, so seldom use them, but that’s because with the 26 paid nights I made this year, and their credit card through which I channel some business expenses (thus earning qualifying points) I can get to Spire without the bonus rates.
