Night credits when not paying personally

I recently travelled with a client who asked that I choose the hotels that we would stay in.  I picked out three Marriotts for two nights each.  My client insisted that he pay for the rooms to "keep things tidy".  On returning home I checked my account and one hotel has credited me with two nights.  The other two have not.  When I contacted them both said that the nights could only be credited if I paid for the rooms myself.  This seems ridiculous as Marriott got twelve nights  from my choice of hotel and yet they won't acknowledge that I stayed.  I don't need the nights or the spend but who knows one year I might.  I was just wondering if anyone else has encountered this.
