RewardsPlus -- Cannot sign up

I'm having trouble signing up for the RewardsPlus program with United/Marriott. I'm Premier Platinum with United so I should be able to have Gold status with Marriott. Every time I try to sign up, I get an error message:

 

"Unfortunately, we were unable to process your registration because the Marriott Bonvoy number entered is invalid or does not match the name on your MileagePlus account. Please verify your number, re-enter the number and try again or contact Marriott Bonvoy Customer Service at 1-800-321-7396. We're sorry for this inconvenience, and thank you for your loyalty."

 

I contacted online support but got boilerplate text about how to sign up online. No help.

 

I had this link set up before Marriott Rewards became "Bonvoy." I have the same email address with both accounts. The name that Marriott says is associated with my Bonvoy account looks the same as with my United account (middle initial, suffix).

 

Can anyone help? This is really frustrating.
