Curious if anyone knows / has any experience of whether checking in online affects my chances / possibilities of getting upgrades or not, whether it be positively or negatively
Makes no difference
depends... when you app check in, you are just another person, elite or not checking in.... versus in person, you can nicely sweet talk the person in giving you an upgrade... my thoughts... I never use the app check in - no value here!
If I really want that upgrade I get in touch a couple of days before the checkin. Generally they find me the best room available at that time, assign me that and change my reservation too. For me therefore I almost always checkin on the app since it speeds up the process and personally doesn’t effect the upgrades I want. Where I haven’t worked the upgrade beforehand my experience on app upgrades has been exactly the same as rocking up at reception, mostly upgraded to bigger rooms, corner rooms and concierge floor rooms which is fine by me!
We’ve had remarkable success with mobile check-in upgrades. We do utilize the chat function to schmooze whenever it’s available. At this very moment, we are in a Sheraton lobby waiting on a suite upgrade to be ready. Mobile chat function notwithstanding, we also reach out in advance. We have been successful more often than not. Is it luck, a humble, charming ask, Ambassador status, a great front desk or the planets being in alignment? Who knows? Grateful, regardless.
I also use the app to check in. I then use the chat feature to ask for a room upgrade.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
I haven’t found that using the mobile app negatively impacts being upgraded. Case in point, we used a free night certificate at the Westin Milwaukee yesterday, checked in the day prior using the app, and got upgraded to a suite on the top floor anyway.
If necessary, we schmooze in advance, but we use the app to checkin regardless so they can block a room for us further ahead. IE, they know we’re coming...
