I'll be interested if any of the LTT/Amb members on MRI are "selected"
Those comments are wicked! Yeah... I cant wait for the big war to start on here "I got this" "Oh I did not get this and I stayed over 1000 nights!"... I think it's gonna be a great late spring/summer of reading these comments!
During the period the promotion is active I have 4 stays on points totaling about 13 nights so I'm hoping I get "surprised" but I'm not holding my breath.
I just read about the Surprise and Delight campaign on Frequent Miler and immediately thought to check here on Insiders to see if anyone was talking about it yet. I'm an Ambassador Elite member with a reward stay booked for April 21 through 26, though it's only the secondary room on my reservation (guests in a double room; I'm in a paid room). I highly doubt I'm one of their "targeted elite members." I've heard from my Ambassador exactly one time in the past 12 months (I've held this status since January 2018, but likely won't get it again due to the spend requirement), and that was simply a form letter telling me to make sure my profile was up-to-date with instructions on correcting my contact information, if necessary.
I can't help but think this campaign is just a bad idea and an easy way for members to feel slighted. Haven't we all learned that if you don't have enough candy to share with the group, you don't give it to one or two people and eat it in front of everyone else? With that being said, I'm also not a fan of the targeted Marriott promotions. Having come from SPG, I'm used to more than one promotion going on at a time, or more than one every four or five months. Since the merger, my Promotions tab is almost always empty (with a message to "come back often"), but I'll find out from Insiders and various blogs that no, Marriott is running other promotions, they're just not for me.
Would I like to be surprised and delighted? Of course; everyone would like that. While an "elevated" welcome gift is nice, I can't help but think that should be more of a norm than a surprise. Maybe just start small and make sure everyone has at least two bottles of water and an even number of wash cloths in the room?
I am just interested in what other names we can come up with for this promotion.
"Disappoint and underwhelm"
Personally, I think they should've tried something bigger, like a "Shock and Awe" campaign where everyone gets Bonvoy points based on their level: 1,000 for members, 10,000 for Silver, 25,000 for Gold, etc. I think that would be better for everyone, but I'm not a marketer.
I think that would be too much $$$ out of the door and would not fit into Marriott's plan since the current merger with SPG & the new Bonvoy name is 'just noise around the edges' as per executives!!! But I like your idea....or just make it easy like Hilton...for every stay for a certain period, you all get 3,000 bonus points.
I like the way Hilton Honors runs their promotions. You know, Marriott could do something as simple and cheap as doubling the welcome points for a quarter and I'd be appreciative. They could call it, "Twice as Nice!"
Oh I like that!!!! and Marriott can figure out a way to get your points into your account like Hilton. I am still impressed ( and usually I am not easily impressed) that my points are in my account less than 24 hours after check out.... there must be something about their IT system - RING RING - Hello, this is Marriott - who is there?------------- "It's Hilton Honors, one of your customer was overly impressed with our point deposit system and referred me to call you !"
Take note Arne... that aint no noise around the edges!!
Soooo... anyone get the surprise and delight ???
I just finished the Marriott portions of a trip that included (for Marriott):
3 stays/12 nights (4 stays for 15 nights if you include Easter weekend which technically isnt part of this trip but directly proceeded it).
Of that, 2 were points stays, 5 nights each total of 10 nights, one of which I paid a cash add-on at time of reserving to guarantee an upgrade to a suite.
So, as you have probably guessed, no surprise and no delight for me.
39k qualified spend last year and I think 149 paid nights, and I am not on my Ambassador's radar to even get a note from her or a rebate of one nights worth of points for this promotion??? And she had two chances.
I'm pretty irked about it.
2 Hilton stays on this trip as well and they hit it out of the park and I'm only diamond by cc with maybe 18-20 nights last year, but I got the Palace Suite (best room in the house) at the Atheene in Bucharest for 5 nights on a points stay, room was going for over $1300 a night following my stay when available on the app. I did guarantee a lower tier suite with points, but got upgraded to the best they had.
Heres a pic below of my welcome gift from Hilton Frankfurt (upgraded to the Lincoln Suite), at The Atheen Palace it was a bottle of wine and cookies. Welcome gift or note from Marriott (beyond the points/titanium local choice option)... nothing in all three stays -
Ambassador hardly seems worth it. I know that after the merger, Marriott said the number of Ambassadors (guests) would double, even though this is still a relatively small number. Perhaps their staffing is too low? Or are they just apathetic? Sad situation...
I'm with you on that... dont think it's worth it and would rather split the balance of my nights to get top tier in other programs.
I am new to Hilton Diamond and I must say I am impressed.. I have never asked for an upgrade and every time I show up, I am upgraded! Great welcome and just downright great service... Marriott is great but inconsistent and I find 90% of the time you have to ask for that upgrade or use those SNA which keeps going and coming back with yes/no email confirmation.
I've had the same experience.......the upgrades I've gotten this year at Marriott's are the ones I asked for when checking in.
You shouldn't have to ask. They should be automatic.
I just completed a points stay at Stockholm Sheraton May 4-6. I did not get any surprises, except getting a very good two room suite upgrade. So, no complaints here.
Well, I’m shocked - I just got picked! $50 Marriott Gift Card. Nicely done, and yep, as I sit here in my €86 BRG Upgraded suite with a $50 gift card in my inbox, yeah, I’m feeling pretty good right now!
Glad to hear someone finally got one of the surprise gift cards! I was starting to wonder if anyone would.
I got the same thing. What I'm trying to figure out is if it can be used for "retail, spa, golf, and food and beverage" as it says in the email.
Does that mean it cannot be applied to any portion of the room rate?
Marriott decided to give me $50 and if I can only spend it on the things mentioned, I'll have no problem finding a good use for this gift card. Better to know in advance before I try to get $50 off my next stay.
Regardless, I was both surprised and delighted.
it says AT PARTICIPATING MARRIOTT BONVOY HOTELS and at hotel outlets with the spa etc.... so it is just like cash upon check in...me thinks.
That may be true. I know it cannot be used to secure a reservation (that's in the Terms and Conditions). It's the "retail, spa, golf..." wording that has me confused. We all know how important it is to understand Marriott's T&C. Beyond that, it appears to be a normal gift card. I guess we'll find out if/when one of us tried to apply it to an upcoming stay.
On the plus side, the card has no expiration date.
Based on reports elsewhere, it appears these gift cards CAN be applied to the room rate.
Successful Redemption Of The Marriott Bonvoy Electronic Gift Cards Sent To Select Members | LoyaltyLobby
I'm going to retract my previous statement based on further reading of the T&C, specifically
"Marriott GiftCards may be used at participating Marriott Hotels at these brands and at participating hotel outlets; retail, spa, golf and food and beverage."
Somehow I overlooked the part that says "may be used at participating Marriott Hotels at these brands...." I just focused on the last part.
Interesting take on someone using it for Room in Japan! Appears it works but the staff dont know how to redeem it!
Yeah I don’t think it applies to room , but heh , $50 gets a pretty nice dinner !
It might cover my bar tab at the next Turn-Up-&-TIPPLE.
bejacob as much as you travel & blog......they should've given you a $500 gift card. Just my 2 cents.
Believe it or not, that actually happened. Way back at the beginning of 2015.
Congratulations to our Roady Award Winners and Insider of the Year
I got a $500 gift card and 250,000 MR points for being named 'Insider of the Year.' Sadly the Roady Awards are now a part of Insider history (and the stuff of legends ).
These days, it's smaller gifts given to lots more people.
Regardless, I appreciate the thought.
That's awesome!!! You deserved it. As much as you travel, I'm sure you made good use of the gift card & points.
I got nothing and nothing!
