Seems like the new standard has become a black marriott bonvoy elite room key. I used to like the fact that keys were different by brand and even hotel in some cases. What does everyone else think?

It's a room key I would rather the focus be on great service and experience and stop asking me for my ID & CREDIT CARD as the first point of contact and welcome me " Welcome to Marriott Hotels and thank you for your business" - I am on a mission to shut down this first credit card and ID welcome which is not customer centric. The room key could be a piece of paper, it's irrelevant to me.
I really don't care what the keys look like. All I care about is that they work each and every time I use them, especially when I have requested and received a late checkout. I've had a number of occasions where the key is automatically deactivated at noon even though I have a 3 pm late checkout, and then I have to do the walk of shame back to the front desk!
I rather like the new black Bonvoy Elite key cards. I suppose it's a branding symbol meant to convey the sense that as an elite member, we should be receiving consistent perks and treatment, and it may be a way to remind the front desk staff of that. Time will tell if it works, but the design is nice.
Debating the color of a physical room key, lol. Meanwhile, there was an article in the Financial Times last year that Hilton has spent over $500 million in digital key technology and infrastructure. Marriott offers it at some properties (from what I’ve read), but Hilton seems to be way out in front.
They aren’t all black-on-black, apparently, and each property does typically carry brand-specific key cards, but just give elite members the “elite” key.
