Marriott Bonvoy 2019 Category Changes
Well as I see it over 300 properties or 4.5% of all the MR portofolio will be affected with over 96% going up a cat. and over 99% of Canada/USA going up. Most properties that went down a cat. were overseas(I'm from Canada).
As I look at peak season rates combined with the new cat. in which 3 hotels I regularly stay at have gone up I find that the value of my points has gone down to an average of 0.8cents/point if I was booking for this summer or this winter in FL.
There's still deals of over a cent/$ value on bookings but they are down.So for those waiting to book in case the magical deals come just don't risk it and book prior to march 5th.
My concern is more for my certificates value, or really usability. It was hard find hotels we wanted to stay at with the 25k certs. Now with most of their Marriott points earning CC coming with 35k annual certs this will only get worse with properties in that category. It very quickly means the credit cards are not worth having, 35k cert sounded like a good offset for the annual fee but it isn’t if you can’t use them in places you’d want to stay in.
It’s really a great example induced inflation of one firm of payment while the cash price of the exact same item remains unchanged.,
It’s not unusual for many of these 35k properties to have cash priced nights with breakfast included in the $150-200 range. In April we're spending a couple nights at the StR Florence. I canceled my 60k night redemptions when I saw two room grades up to a suite with breakfast and Butler plus a €50/night hotel credit was going for €505 a night including tax. I’ll pay that and earn over 12k night in points per night. Now it’s doubtful that deal will be around during peak season when those rooms are €1k but it’ll be a 100k hotel those days.
If if that’s the metric, hotel redemption are so priced out of compition then there are better ways reduce travel expenses. Most of the program though is not credited card earnings but reducing cost of leisure travel for loyalty during work travel. even here when the points price of a hotel has as much of a disconnect as Marriott's do with the cash price as a work benefit it is reduced.
