Is this a good deal? 125K points for $500 cruise cert.....any thoughts?
In short... NO,but if you don't need points for hotel stays and have a ton of them maybe?
Now if we are to compare with Hilton which is suppose to be worth 5cents/point and MR at 9cents/point here's what you get.
You get 4 cents/point in value for this cruise certificate..if I compare with my Hilton points I can have a 500$ gift card for 215k points which means I get 2.325cents in value,in other words with each MR point if you compare you are only adding 1.625cents/point compared to Hilton points.
So this to me means that this is a very poor value as you can easily get over 1 cent/ point on hotel stays with Marriott and are losing 60% of its value.
Well pauly222 from a strictly "value" point of view probably not. That said, if you don't use a cert but book via Marriott's cruise partner, Cruise Only, you can earn points - up to 9X per dollar - and get 25K and 50K bonuses on certain cruises.
However, if that $500 gets you into a cabin you might not otherwise be able to enjoy, sure why not cash in the points. If not, you might be better off getting the additional 4500 points for that $500 bucks.
I have found the folks at Cruises Only to be really helpful in finding great values. Anyway, let us know what you decide.
Hi msannmcd, well the question was if it's a good deal and I told him it's not really as you only get 4cent/point equivalency value that can easily get 9-10 cents/point if you redeem for a free night stay.
Now with cruises only that deal on points is good but it does not negate the 9points/$ spent if you book directly with them but i'll be honest that 45$ in points value on the certificate portion is very comparable to the cruise i'm doing with another travel agency which gives me 175$ onboard credit for a 1750$ cruise. Some give points and some give cruise cash or onboard credit.
For me it's all in how many points you have and if you're going to use them?
With my points I am staying at a Marriott property in Miami for 2 nights/50k points total with a going rate of 334$/night...which gives me 13.36cents/point in value..... but that being said If I had 2-3 million points I might have used 500k points of that to pay off my cruise?
The value of the cruise certificate compared to a free night stay is very poor..that's all i'm stating and what I understood the question to be..... thanks!
pauly222, Hate to break it to you, but you are quite off in your cents per point calculation. You aren't getting 13.36¢/point, you are getting 1.336¢/point - probably less, since the property is in Miami, there are probably resort/destination fees as well that you aren't factoring in - and does that $334/night include regular taxes/fees?. Also, from your earlier comment, the point values you evaluate at 5¢/point and 9¢/point - they would be 0.5¢/point and 0.9¢/point respectively.
Hi,you are correct I put the decimal at the wrong place.....this is downtown Miami in high season...total with tax has gone up to 693$USD total which with my 25k points per night/50k total for 2 nights gives me 1.386 cents/point with taxes included and this isn't a resort.
Thanks for highlighting my decimal error...hope I clarified what I meant?
