This week I decided to book a hotel in Newcastle on Tyne for a trip to watch my beloved Sale Sharks. Going to the Marriott web site I found that 2 out of the 3 Marriott Hotels in Newcastle have left the programme, leaving only 1 in Gateshead. This will almost certainly mean that my stay will now be with IHG as they have a far better choice. This comes on top of 2 of my favourite hotels, the Convento in Evora, Portugal and the Sheraton Solabre Golf in Gran Canaria leaving earlier last year. From conversations I have had with a number of hotel GM's ,I know that there may well be others contemplating the same thing .

Is this happening elsewhere in the world? Also can anybody throw a light on the reason why? I know that there are always efforts to rebrand  hotels going on(the le Meridien in Malta is currently closed being remanded as the Marriott Malta) but there are hotels which have been in the programme for many years  which are just leaving.
