More likely they just borrowed the idea from MasterCard, that has MC Titanium directly above MC Platinum (and below MC World and World Elite).
Maybe that's the origin.
I still think it comes from the fact that by the time anyone reaches Titanium they will have at least one knee or hip replacement and so a person's status reflects their anatomical parts!
To me, Titanium is just a dumb name!
I think Titanium sounds cool, but that's about it. In my opinion it lacks the sound of something prestigious, exclusive, and...well, elite.
I personally think they could have gone with Palladium, but people would have confused that with Platinum. I’m sure Marriott wanted a name that was different enough from Platinum as to not confuse the two. Also, because Titanium is an inexpensive metal, Marriott could (I’m dreaming) make the new lifetime membership cards out of it!? Iridium may have been a better choice, too. Of course, if they simply wanted an expensive metal, they could have used Copper, but it doesn’t have as nice a ring to it...

Aha, brilin, look to Avios here. I reckon Marriott is planning to launch Bonvoy as a “loyalty currency” along the lines planned by BA when it coined Avios. Hence like Avios, the bland, loosely travel connected, but not Marriott related, name. Alas, the road to a generic loyalty currency has been one to perdition since the demise of the Green Shield stamp. Avios never managed it, the problem was the high number of Avios needed for flights, and the high copays! Nectar remains becalmed, but I think Marriotts tempted to have a run at this. Hotels are both aspirational and reasonably attainable, with no copays so I reckon it could be a runner...
It is still a useless name. Means nothing, gives no association to the product and inspires loyalty to what? However, for me from now on they can call it whatever they want. Malta in 2 weeks, Fuertaventura in March, both mainly on old points and free nights then that's me out of the game till Christmas!
Oh, yes, brilin, the Bonvoy name is the typical outcome of brand-imaging fluff. I can absolutely see some ponytailed beardy advertising type with flower-power braces and early Gout “it’s why I wear the sandals” (alas, that doesn’t explain the socks) waxing lyrical about the Bonvoy name “expresses journeying and arriving in their neon lit desk-free room, delighted that that their purchases of industrial strength haemorrhoid cream allow them to luxuriate in this Holiday Inn, um that is you, right, oh yeah, sorry, Fairground Inn, yeah, worth $43, plus taxes, never forget the taxes, now, so where was I? Ooh yeah, haemorrhoid cream, or was it gout?” - as Arne laps it all up!

Why? Titanium, is much more common and much less valuable than Platinum is price wise. However, since it is much harder/strong element than platinum is, maybe that is the basis - but given how inept this merger and IT smashing were (as opposed to an actual merging) I don't think anyone at Marriott is smart enough to have applied actual logic.
Before that there was "Plutonium" status: Marriott needs a Plutonium tier
