Both seem to offer the same perks: 75,000 bonus points for signing up, 6x points per $1 on properties and 2x per $ for all other spend. I'm curious if this group has a preference on Marriott Visa or the SPG Amex. Thanks.
If you can spring for the Luxury Amex, go for it. You get $300 in Marriott stay credits each year, so that eats up a lot of the $450 annual fee, especially if you travel for work and are expensing stays. That leaves $150 left to make up for the fee, and you get precheck/global entry, and priority pass. Add in an extra point on restaurants too. Very worth it if you can make the fee work for you.
Love this question. I've been asking this to myself daily post-merger. I have 5 (3 x AMEX, 2 x Chase). When the next annual fees come, I plan on canceling all, save one. Still undecided which one. It'll probably be the Chase Premium Plus as Visa is more useful for me should I want to use it for non-Marriott stays.
Why cancel any - except maybe the Lux AMEX? You can get more value out of the free nights annually vs. the annual fees, depending on your traveling. TBD on how using the 50k cert in the peak award climate will go and getting at least $150 value from it...
I have the $95 annual fee Marriott and spg/amex cards. The amex card has a lot more offers than the chase/marriott(for example $40 back on $200 CY stay and other random shopping offers). I keep them both cuz I figure they both give a free night that makes up for the fee.
Exactly - you will probably get more/better offers (at least today) on the SPG AMEX, but then you may run into the problem of shopping at places that don't take AMEX. If you don't have an "AMEX usage" issue, I'd say get the SPG AMEX.
Good point, but I use my amex for damn near all of my purchases without issue. I think the dude that cuts my hair doesn't take amex, and the Thai place we like to eat at doesn't take it, but overall it's much harder to find places that don't take Amex these days. Just my opinion/experience.
