l can't figure out if I should go out of my way to get across the line...
If you do a cheap redemption you get there and with that you get a 40 k cert as one of your choices, so to me it is a simple trade up. And then you get the additional points multiplier of 25%. I say go for it.
Such a no brainer... go for it.... I am short 3 nights for platinum renewal and will go for it by Dec. 30th.. I cant live without the 4pm check out! I am keeping my standard 50 nights yearly and then split the rest of my stays with Hilton...
Do you actually get 4pm ever? I seem to have the worst luck getting it.
I've never had a problem getting 4pm checkout. Just used it last weekend in SF. Checked out around 3:45pm with no questions asked. That's been pretty typical when I've requested it. Most of the time I don't need it, but when I did, the hotels have always honored it.
4pm checkout is like the norm for me now. It’s not that I use it often, but I know it’s there and I never have to sweat leaving the room by noon! Quite unpleasant when not on Marriott stays, had to revert to some late checkout persuasion recently at a Crowne Plaza, a skill I’m not nearly as well practiced now!
If you redeem one night at a Cat 1 hotel it will cost you 7,500 points. Even under the old Marriott scheme this was worth it to get to 75 nights as the extra 2.5 points per $ earned during the entire next year would recoup the cost on just $3,000 of Marriott spending. Of course now getting to 75 nights adds an extra elite choice, and you can chose a 40,000 point certificate, although it’s worth remembering you’ll most likely redeem it at the standard Cat 5 rate which is 35,000 points.
Effectively you’re buying a 35,000 point certificate for 7,500. Well worth it. An easy no-brainier.
Short answer. Yes.
Longer answer. Absolutely.
If you can't find a category 1 property, look for the cheapest rate at a hotel near home an book it. Check in and either enjoy the stay or leave the keys in the room and check out using the app in the morning. With only 1 night to reach Platinum Premier, there is no good reason to miss out on the additional benefits next year.
Absolutely. Good luck and I believe it will be worth it.
Thanks everyone!! That's what I suspected, hoped and feared. I can't see any way I can get a night in between now and the end of the year, as the closest option is a three hour drive away. But I will try!
You need to show up, just checkin, mess up the room and leave. Pain to do considering your distance, but it is worth it
I am, I have two nights coming up Monterery California....that will leave me at 74. I have a one night, 12k point stay at a property down the street to get me the 75th night....I am looking forward to the 25% bonus on points and the 5 SNAs.
BTW, did you already use your 50 night award choice ? You can request EQ nights.
No, and I'm not sure how to find those to use them. I've had no "welcome" email, so I assumed it would kick in when the year ended.

Choose 5 Elite Night Credits
FYI I tried to get a "night" credit for a reward redemption a few weeks ago. It was a zero-sum charge, so they said:
"We apologize we are unable to post this stay to your account as your hotel bill does not show any eligible charges. As a Marriott Rewards member, each time you stay at a participating hotel you may earn points or frequent flyer credit and personal Elite nights based on the eligible charges shown on the final itemized hotel bill in your name. "
Honestly that has me whether about going through any effort for a reward night.
(The other annoyance... I had four nights lost a month ago when my corporate agency booked me through Expedia!)
If you booked the hotel through Marriott, it should not have mattered whether your bill was zero. If you made a redemption stay, that should have counted as one night. If you can find the confirmation from when you booked it, I'd call the Rewards customer service line and ask why you didn't earn your one night credit. With only a few days left in the year, this is worth following up. Don't wait around for an email reply. Call. Chances are you can get this resolved before you get off the phone. Trust me on this. More often than not, the fastest way to resolve an issue is by phone.
Then that's what I'm gonna do!
Good luck. Let us know how it works out.
It's sad that Marriott hasn't figured out how to properly use 21st century technology. Maybe someday.
The phone call did it, and I got the rewards night recognized as a qualifying one!
I'm at 75, people!! Thanks for all the help and ideas!
Congratulations erichz! Glad you got it worked out! bejacob is always good for great rewards program navigation advice! We appreciate you coming back and letting us know how things worked out. Stick around, post when you feel like it. There is so much to know and share in the new Marriott world.
Great news. Nice to hear how things turned out. Lots of folks think I'm crazy when I suggest calling to resolve issues, but it almost always works. We'll look forward to reading about your experiences as a Platinum Premier member in 2019.
Since its Christmas week, I would assume hotels are super cheap regardless of category level. I picked up my family's bill at a local Marriott for $75 the other day to get my EQNs. I've seen other places going as low as $50. Why waste time with the long drive to burn a Cat 1 award?
Yeah, if you’re not close to a cat1 property, simply book a local cheapo for cash. Simply ask how much you are likely to redeem that 35,000 point award for, and there’s your budget. With the added benefit of 2.5 extra points per $ spent next year.
Marriott usually bumps you to the next level if you are 2 or 3 stays short.
ppino69, under normal circumstances I would agree. This year has been anything but normal, so I wouldn’t take any chances on them being generous at the end of this year.
I agree, but this is not a normal year. I have had several years that I was close and they bumped me up. This year-I have no idea what they will do. I would not not let free lounge access get away for one night. Looks like you travel a lot and can use it.
Someone told me they are not bumping anyone to reach the level this year as we had tons of opportunity with the SPG merger and counts to reach the 50/75 nights.. + they have so many Elite members with taking on SPG members...so I would never hope/dare that if I am short one, they will bump me over - nah.. not happening this year I think
I must admit I’d be surprised if Marriott comped status for 2019, so many of their changes have been to make 50 nights mean 50 nights, 75 to mean 75, so comping status is very unlikely, no matter how close. Of course comped status, if given still wouldn’t get the certificate!
Why would they refuse to bump someone up especially if theyve been a loyal member for years?
yoohleah, is that a rhetorical question? If so, I’ll let it stand. If not, then I would encourage you to immerse yourself in deep reading exploration of this site and the litany of posts going back to June or July of this year. The merger of programs has, in many ways, been extremely poorly executed. Exceptions (which is what your are asking about, an exception to stated program terms and conditions) are hard to make. They can’t get the right things right, so it makes it very hard to believe that they could get the wrong things (exceptions to policy) right. Your question is “why would they refuse?” If your question was “why should they refuse,” well that would be easy to answer... they shouldn’t.
In years past Marriott has been known to bump someone up if they come close (especially if they had several strong years in a row). With many more Platinums and Platinum Premiers this year, it's hard to know whether Marriott will do it again. They might, but many of us are assuming they won't. That's why the overwhelming advice (whether that is to reach PP or striving for legacy LT status) is to make sure you reach the stated criteria so there isn't any question.
As nationwide points out, anyone hoping for an exception this year is likely to be disappointed.
I'm late to the party, but I totally would. Heck, I did a 2-night stay at the Waikiki Beach Marriott just to push myself over the 75-night mark. When you're that close, it makes sense to.
DO IT! Heck, Saturday morning I am flying BWI-RDU-BWI to keep my SWA status. Need one more segment! I was so close through normal channels.
tker, how was your mileage run last weekend? worth it?
There it is... Went well. No issues SWA A List for another year!
Congratulations. Sometimes if pays to make a phone call. Trying to do something like this on a computer will not work as everything is cut and dry. Speaking to a human allows for discussion, common sense (something that is missing more than ever) and emotion. Please share your experiences.
Glad things worked out in your favor with the MR hotline stay resolution to bump you to 75!
