Travelling to Vienna next March and looking for hotel advice.
There are many options. We stayed at the Imperial Riding Renaissance. We took local transportation (there is a tram right outside the hotel) to downtown area and we found it to be very convenient (it was walkable, about 1/2 hour to downtown, but very pretty areas to walk through. We did have access to the lounge which was a great benefit. Comes down to how much you want to spend or how many points you wish to use.
I have stayed a couple of times at the Renaissance Wien. It is outside the city center, about 1 block from the Meidling Hauptstrasse U-bahn stop (and only 1 stop from Schönbrunn Palace). It's a nice hotel in a quieter environment than center city. Clean, well-appointed rooms. No lounge but as a platinum member you get breakfast in the restaurant. The food is quite good, we had breakfast, lunch & dinner meals there and it was always good. The staff have also always been cheerful and helpful. Easy cab or U-bahn ride to central Vienna. And if you need it they can arrange a car to take you to the airport at no greater cost than a cab - very quick, easy service; they can even put the cost on your hotel bill if you want to.
While I don't know what you might be planning to see/do in Vienna, here are some suggestions of places I can recommend highly.
And, yes, Vienna IS a place to go for music!
We stayed in January 2018 in Imperial Riding School.
Never ever again. Vienna is great but this hotel is outdated, lack of service, even the lounge is not really nice.
Try something else - through the merger there are plenty of other hotels possible.
Sorry you had a bad experience. We were there in 2013 and we had a great time and the hotel met/exceeded our needs. We had access to the Executive lounge and found it be great place to relax from a full day of touring. It was not downtown, but getting downtown and any place in the area was easy and convenient.
Sorry to hear, I was at the Ren Imperial Riding School in Fall 2016 and it was good. The rooms are indeed a bit small but I find that with Europe, but we loved the lounge.
