Does using Mobile Key invalidate your physical room keys?

So, I'm exploring new brands and currently at Aloft KL.

For the first time, I had the option to use a Mobile Key. I did mobile check-in and it still required my to check-in and get keys at the front desk. But, then a few hours later the app notified me that my mobile key was ready. So, when I got back to the room I thought I would try it. It was quite slow and took a few tries, so I wasn't eager to use it again this morning when we returned from breakfast. However, I found that I had no choice at neither of our physical keys worked anymore. They do work in the elevator, but not at the door.

So, what has your experience been with mobile key? Does it invalidate the physical keys, or is it just a coincidence that they stopped working.
