1) Does it still work?
2) Did the points count as lifetime?
I hope not! Anyone looking to do this should have done it BEFORE the 18th!
I am seeing claims on flyertalk that it does, but I trust information here far more.
I haven't merged yet, so I can't valid the claim yet.
Yes, AMEX is a Marriott partner and they have stated AMEX points transfers will 'continue', since it was an indirect transfer to SPG. It will now 'still' be a 1:1 ratio (which is 1 pt better than what it used to be for transferring 1,000 AMEX MR points).
Good for Lifetime, bad for value of rewards... So if you spent $10,000 on the Amex in July you would get 20,000 Starpoints, which would convert to MR at a 3:1 - 60,000 MR; in August you spend the same $10,000 and you get 20,000 MR points? Sure they tick the lifetime counter if you are chasing, but come January 1, that Amex doesn't look as rewarding (of course no worse than the current Chase card)... Maybe AMEX Luxury is a better option unless you have Lifetime status already?
Definitely not the most efficient use of points, but it gives some people an additional option for filling up if they need it.
Hopefully I won't.
I need to do the math though, to figure out what is the better value, buying point or transferring them if I am short later in the year.
Good for 'pre-combination program day' points, if you needed them to take advantage of redemptions this year. Could really get some value out of it then.
Just another opportunity that I was asleep at the wheel for... Luxury Card = 300,000 points!? I would have been all over that bad boy. $450 for 300,000 points is a pretty good deal. But hindsight is 20/20.
No, AMEX Membership rewards points
Yes thanks to you I was able to send the MR points around the loop and I think get good value. Still not bat at 1.2 points though.
Also good for if you need points to make any 'aspirational' property stays, post-8/18 as well. The transfer value would be a wash, but you could easily make that up on the redemption end!
If you are chasing lifetime points, it appears that the AMEX points transferred do count post merger at least in that secret legacy lifetime points counter. Of course we are guessing because we do not know for sure what caused the counter to tick up, but mine did by the points from AMEX. Prior you could not transfer them directly to MR and the ratio has gone down from 1.5 to 1.2. Prior you had to send them through the SPG account and they definitely did not count. My SPG AMEX points also augment the counter now.
That is good to know, if it stays I have one additional place to top off from, if I need it come December
I have a standard Platinum Amex charge card here in the UK and transfers have just become possible again. The transfer rate is 2 Amex : 3 new SPG/Marriott/Ritz-Carlton. This exactly mirrors the previous rate of 2 Amex :1 SPG, so at least no devaluation here. I like the flexibility of being able to choose to transfer to New Marriott / Hilton / Radisson.
