Hi - I am staying at St. Kitts in November for 11 nights and I'm using a chunk of my Marriott points. How do I maximize the points for my stay? How do I get the best room? Thanks for any advice!
Many insiders have been successful in contacting the hotel directly to ask exactly that... IMO I believe verysuiteboy is probably one that really is able to leverage some kind words and contacts into upgrades and amenities. Hey Platpboy, any thoughts to help?
Thanks for the shout-out arizonatag! I don’t believe I do anything particularly special to leverage upgrades. I WILL say that upgrades are probably the single most important benefit to me, since all my stays are leisure-oriented.
Where possible, I do mention a suite upgrade (or upgrade to a larger room) would be desirable in the “comments” section of both the Marriott & the former SPG websites when making reservations. But I don’t stop there.
Whenever I am contacted via email from the property directly, whether it be the Concierge, Guest Relations, Guest Coordinator, VIP coordinator, front-desk supervisor, whatever they call themselves, I always respond quickly & I’m always extremely courteous, and show concern for how their day is going before jumping in to make specific room requests. I use humor, and tend to be self-deprecating, not pompous. Also, don’t beat around the bush. If you want a suite, say so.
Another thing. My stays are seldom more than 5 days in one particular property. An 11-night stay could be a major deterrent to giving you a significant upgrade. Let’s say there’s a lovely suite they could possibly give you. They have to weigh giving it to one person (you) for 11 nights, or perhaps they could use that room to make 4 other Platinum members happy who’ll be staying over the same 11 nights (Plat1 for 2 nights, Plat2 for 3 nights, Plat3 for 1 night, Plat4 for 5 nights). Maybe they’ll keep that suite empty for 6 nights because someone is actually paying for it for the middle 5 nights of your stay! They decide that.
Furthermore, I don’t generally pay for the “bottom” standard-type dumpster-view room. If it’s a property with 8 or 10 or more different room types, I may pay for a mid-to-upper-category room type, just a category or two below the room I may want to be upgraded to. That way, I’m more likely to get that suite, than another PP who paid for that dumpster-View room. They’ll be upgraded to my corner deluxe, while I get the oceanfront suite. (Don’t get me wrong, I’ve gotten suite upgrades even when paying for the lowest room category or on points redemptions, solely based on my status)
Regardless, you can always call/contact the property directly, and discuss with them if your stay is for a special occasion, or for any other reason, or if they can’t upgrade you, can they thrown in any other amenities? Spa services, cake, champagne, dinner for two. It might be a “no”, but it’s always a “no” if you don’t ask.
It's been almost a decade since I was at the property but I called ahead before my stay and got both rooms I booked upgraded to 1 Bedroom Suites in one of their Garden Houses. That said, I was Platinum at the time and so what part of my success had to do with my status versus me asking very nicely is hard to say.
You're heading there during the shoulder season so there should be plenty of rooms available for upgrade.
