What was the purpose of removing Gold Elite members from the Lounge?

Months ago we made a reservation to a Sheraton Hotel because of a Family Reunion.  At the time I asked about Upgrades and Lounge Access and was told unless I was Platinum I would not have access.  On August 2nd we were Platinum Life Time so I was pretty excited that we had access to the Lounge.  Here is the Kicker....I have never seen so many people in a Lounge in my 8 years of having Lounge access.  I was told by the hotel staff that the fear was that those with access had asked for multiple room keys and was handing them out to friends and family.  At one point literally 20 or so high school students entered about 10 or 15 minutes prior the time of ending the complimentary breakfast - which by the way was one of the best we had experienced in a while - there were so many of them they had to send them down to the restaurant....   So here is my issue...We have literally worked hard to become Platinum and we did so to continue the use of the Lounge and now we learn that some or maybe all hotels are indiscriminately handing out extra room keys making it possible for those with families or friends or schools for that matter to enjoy lounge access....

Now don't get me wrong. I have not had a serious issue when a family of four for example have access when they are platinum or when you are rooming with another couple and they join you for breakfast or whatever but this was so over the top - I was seriously concerned as to Why did Marriott disallow Gold members from entering the lounge and will allow those who are not even reward members to have this access with no checks and balances.

I am really interested in what others are experiencing.  Hopefully come the 18th of August this too will be another area of clarification for Lounge Access....
