Gold status is part of the AMEX Business Plat. card. If you have the card for 7 years will they count under the new program for LTG (have the 400 nites)-asking for a friend
According to Marriott, No. Credit cards have nothing to do with lifetime status and will not count as years at "X" status based on being awarded status via a credit card - you have to qualify under the new program posted criteria and that's the only way. In the new program, you need to earn Gold status for 7 years, not been given it via a credit card (supposedly), but we'll see if those things slip through the cracks for some folks in a couple of weeks.
thanks so much for your reply; I am on a learning curve for sure; my friend has minimal knowledge; while he has the Marriott card, 99% of spend is using AMEX
To me, this is another grey area that brings in the question of what does "earned" mean? and how far Marriott will go to determine it. On the SPG side, there were two ways of getting gold status through Credit Card; spend a pre-determined amount on their SPG AMEX credit card (40K I think) or have a platinum card for which I pay 699 CAD per year. On the Marriott side, with a few fancy cards one could also achieve gold and maybe even plat without spending a night in the hotel based on spend and 15 night credits for each card. So in my opinion it gets tricky for them to exclude the SPG gold diggers from the credit card route while ignoring that many Marriot folks achieved status each year on nights and spend from a Marriott and/or Ritz card.
