Marriott T&Cs wrote: General MembershipMembers may not earn both Points and Miles for the same stay. A Member may switch from earning Points to Miles, or vice versa, before a given stay by updating his or her Membership profile or by contacting the Rewards Program Guest Services office. The Member will begin earning the new "currency" (Points or Miles) with the next stay. Previous earnings will not be converted to the new currency. If the Member wishes to "convert" Points into Miles, he or she may redeem Points for a Miles Reward. A “stay" or "qualifying stay" means all consecutive nights a Rewards Program Member registers and personally pays and stays at any Rewards Program participating hotel, for which the room is billed to the Member. There are instances when a stay will not be eligible to earn Points or elite night credit. For example, rooms booked via third party online retailers, like Expedia.com, Travelocity.com, Hotels.com, Booking.com, and Priceline.com, are not eligible. Please carefully review the Section below titled “Earn Points” for additional details on when your stay is or is not eligible to earn Points and other requirements that must be met to ensure Points that are earned are added to your Membership Account.

However, when attending certain conventions/conferences and placing my reservation through the convention housing coordinator, I have received my points and elite nights when I provided my rewards membership number. I either provided it at time of booking or had it attached to my reservation when checking in at the hotel. I have no experience using the third party agents listed in the T&Cs. So, a modified short answer could be, generally not with some exceptions.
Generally no, but there are exceptions, such as booking through AMEX Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR). You just have to ensure your MR # is added to the reservation. In this case, you will get points & elite night credits.
