Am traveling to Munich in July. Any recommendations of which Marriott to choose? Or Starwood?
Munich Marriotts are not very conveniently located, except for the Courtyard close to the main railway station which is not the best neighbourhood. The one in Freising is by the airport and is sort of ok if you don't mind taking S-bahn downtown. If you want a full Marriott in town then the best bet is the one by the English Garden, but it is not within walking distance from Marienplatz. I don't know about SPG.
I can't really recommend Marriott when in Munich. For the same reasons cyrill gave.
I stayed at Aloft while in Munich. It was well located by the train station and I could hop on the train into Marienplatz or walk!
The CY was in a sketchy area to me and I didn't want to walk down side streets. If you read the reviews on TripAdvisor, the hotel it self is good, the area is not. Granted, ANY hotel around a train station will have some level of sketchy. Aloft did too, some beggars, however they don't act like the ones in the US. They just sit there (except for Sunday! We didn't see any on Sunday! LOL - Day of rest maybe...) and don't beg the same way the ones in the states do.
I liked Aloft. If I can find where I posted photos on here I will share.
I stay at the Res Inn Munich East. It was good, and had a great breakfast and amazing staff. It is a short walk (couple of minutes) to Munich East Train station which has a direct train from the airport. Getting around is easy, as there is a trolley that goes directly to Odeansplaz and a S bahn that goes to city center in five minutes. There are lots of places to eat around there and good German and International food.
If you are traveling around from there many local trains leave from Munich East and the trains are cheap if you do not go outside of Bavaria (including Salzburg)
The area is safe.
While I wouldn't normally recommend a Courtyard in general (mostly because they tend to be very cookie-cutter and they treat their elite status members no different than any random, first-timer off the street), the Courtyard Marriott Munich East was quite nice and very conveniently located to the subway station. Marienplatz was just three stops away and the Courtyard is just 2-3 blocks from the subway station. There is a Residence Inn connected to the Courtyard but that was a Category 6 hotel for some reason (it certainly wasn't any nicer) and we were able to use our Free Anniversary Night certificate at the Courtyard because it was only a Category 4 (although, it was by far nicer than many Category 6 Courtyards I have been to here in the States). The breakfast buffet is plentiful and good (albeit expensive at 80 Euros for three people). There is a nice gym located in the bowels of the hotel and although the immediate area is not particularly nice, my partner, mother and I had no apprehensions walking the 2-3 blocks to/from the subway station even with our bags in tow. Also, there is a very authentic German restaurant located on the way to/from the subway station called Gaststätte Zum Brünnstein , which was very good and highly-recommendable. Just be aware that if you are a couple or trio sitting at a table for four, they will sit a random stranger at your table in the middle of your meal and he may not speak any English, lol.
