This March I had two stays at the W Hotel Times Square for business that were booked YE2017. When checking in I was confronted with a new hidden 'resort fee' -- this left me exceptionally disappointed.
Charging hidden fees is bad business. As a frequent business traveler who hits Platinum status by end of April, I find this tactic highly distasteful. The gentleman checking me in indicated Marriott has begun charging this resort fee at all Times Square hotels.
There is no 'resort' quality to NYC Times Square while on business - offering a $25 reimbursement for a liquor tab at the bar is an odd choice for Marriott given the company's pedigree. I've been working hard to avoid alcohol while on business travel.
As a customer being presented with this hidden fee during check in on a Sunday night at 10pm, the only option is to suck it up and have money vacuumed from my wallet. It's a highly highly distasteful experience.
I will no longer stay at Marriott [+SPG] properties in Times Square. As a multi-year platinum member, I am now rethinking my brand selection with my business travel, and the travel of my employees.
In sum - very very disappointed to be writing this post regarding this exceptionally poor business decision by Marriott.
