Would appreciate tips on sites and Marriott properties in Savannah GA.
We loved our stay at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront last year in April. We were there in the middle of their renovations in an amazing waterfront room - they were very kind to us.
The location was great - easy walking distance to waterfront and beautiful Savannah Historic District (1 mile square). We had an amazing lunch at Tubby's Seafood, sitting outside on the waterfront.
We highly recommend stopping by The River Street Visitor Information Center, 1 West River Street, Savannah, GA 31401 (or Savannah Visitor Center @ 301 MLK Blvd) for advice on what to see/do during the time you are visiting. Really great tips, maps. We were warned that Savannah is not safe after dark. C
The Marriott on the river is a little dated. Apparently they are doing renovations but then again they’ve been doing renovations for some time. If you stay there, ask for a river view, watching those big cargo ships go by is amazing.
The Bohemian is at the other end of Bay Street. More of a boutique hotel and right on the water. Rooms can be small and a bit noisy, walls are thin. It has a great rooftop bar to watch the ships go by. It’s more “in town” than the other Marriott. Short walk to a lot of terrific restaurants. You will want to valet park since parking there is at a premium.
The Mansion on Forsyth Park, far and away my favorite hotel in Savannah. Right across the street from historic Forsyth Park. It’s about a 12-15 minute walk into Broughton Street and another 3 minutes to Bay Street. The place is a typical Kessler property, lot of cool and funky paintings on the walls. All the rooms the big with sunken tubs. There is always activity going on in the park. The hotel does have a shuttle that will take you to the Bohemian and drop you off, they will also run you back if you don’t want to walk or drive yourself. You can also go have a drink on the rooftop of the Bohemian and charge it to your room at the Mansion. The Mansion also accepts dogs. I like to eat dinner in the city and then walk back to the Mansion on Bull Street.
Tons of good restaurants in Savannah, Pink House, although not as good as it used to be in my opinion, Vic’s on the River, look for the hand drawn map on the wall from Union soldiers, Local 11 Ten near the Mansion, The Grey is in an old bus station and cool and my favorite restaurant in Savannah Chive Sea Bar and Lounge. If you like mussels, this place is a must. After dinner stop at Leopold’s for awesome ice cream.
I think Lady and Sons is way overrated, tourist trap with so so food. If you want authentic southern food go to Mrs Wilkes Dinning Room, cash only and family style, good stuff.
They are building a new JW Marriott on the river that is going to be awesome. Took the old power plant, knocked it down but will keep the smoke stacks up.
Hope that helps, enjoy and start your diet now.
