Fourth trip to Europe(every 3 years)--all locations new except AMS(Renaissance is great and booked on points already)---any ideas? posts? links?---thanks as always
I loved the Ren. in Amsterdam. Great location and wonderful service. Have fun.
We stayed at a JW Marriott, which is on its own island, and about a 20 minutes boat ride to and from Venice. Great hotel and the location was not a problem. We managed to see everything that we wanted to do in Venice (we were there 5 days) we built into our schedule enough time for any trips into and out Venice area (St. Marks Square). Oh yes, the boat goes in and out St. Marks square. I have been to Salzburg, Amsterdam and Cologne, but it was long time ago. Each city has lot to see. Have a great time.
Salzburg is wonderful! I stayed at the Sheraton Grand Salzburg Hotel on points and due to being plat, was upgraded to a suite. It was wonderful!
Sheraton Grand Salzburg: 5 star Hotel in Salzburg
They have a great lounge too. Loved the breakfast and dinner apps. Great selection, friendly staff. AND an outside seating area in the lounge. It is a short walk to the old town It is also right next to the Mirabell Place and Garden. Most tours start there.
We used Panorama Tours. Panorama Tours: sightseeing tours & private tours
Self Tour of Hohensalzburg Castle - really well done!
Took a day trip to Hallstatt and toured the salt mine there. The drive was breathtaking.
Maria was not kidding when she sang about the hills being alive with the sound of music.
Salzburg is magical. I could wander the old town streets all day!
I can only speak for Venice. The two main Marriott options are the JW resort on its own island and the Boscolo in the old jewish ghetto. I have not been to the resort, so others would be able to speak for that. I have no idea about SPG properties in town. Probably good options too.
Boscolo is a gem in several ways: it is off the tourist area, so you are staying in the area where locals live and hang out. However, don't expect magnificent views.Nighttime Venice is very different from daytime when cruise ship crowds are roaming wild. And you can still walk to and from about anywhere without a need for a taxi or a shuttle. There is also a few very nice local restaurants in the area. Try Paradiso Perduto for a humongous seafood platter feast.
Boscolo has a shuttle to Saint Mark and a shuttle to Murano. Very handy. As a PPE we got a full breakfast. Room upgrade was fairly decent. Concierge service was top notch.
There is a public transportation jetty within 5 minute walk (not the private hotel jetty) that is also the first Alilaguna stop from the airport. Beware that it is the last stop on the way back to the airport and sometimes Alilaguna boats come completely packed.
