I am close to reaching Silver status. Does the process begin again in 2018 or is the status permanent once achieved?
Regular silver status repeats every year, although you hold any status you earn status (under today's Marriott/SPG pre-merger rules) for 14 months after the year you earn it, so if you earn it this year, you will hold status until Feb 28, 2019. But, you have to re-qualify in 2018 to hold it beyond that point. Once the Marriott and SPG rewards programs are merged (expected in late 2018, or even 2019), these timeframes may change
However, once you achieve lifetime status, you hold that status for the rest of your life. Silver lifetime is 250 earned nights and 1,200,000 points earned. More on the various lifetime statuses here: Marriott Rewards Lifetime Status
Also, you can have Silver status every year by holding the Marriott Rewards Premier (or Premier Business) Visa credit cards, which give you 15 elite night credits on your account anniversary every year.
mrwhipple13 's response was exactly what you needed to know except for one minor issue. Lifetime Silver is 1, 200,000 points. Lifetime Gold is 1,600,000. I would also say if you want to work on status go with mrwhipple13's
second message. Get the credit card. Automatic Silver and if you are getting Silver on stays you will be over 30 already. Some spend on the card and a few more stays and you're Gold which has a lot more benefits than Silver. I waited quite awhile to get the card and really wish I had gotten it earlier. I charged a lot of Marriott rooms on my Hilton AmEx and if I had those points I would be at lifetime platinum instead of worrying if I will get it before merger changes the rules.
