I prefer not to stay at a hotel that is pet friendly. How do I find out before I book the hotel?
I'd call the property directly, then ask away (If it's not stipulated on the hotel site, ask if they accept pets, if there is a pet deposit [refundable/nonrefundable], if they provide any pet amenities etc)
Calling is of course the most reliable route (unless you get a chowderhead that doesn't know and misinforms you - unlikely, but not impossible).
If you want to screen the list of properties that you consider calling, use the Amenities box on Marriott.com
Business Center (18)
Fitness Center (14)
Free Breakfast (12)
Free High Speed Internet (11)
High Speed Internet (17)
New Lobby (5)
Pet Friendly (9)
etc etc etc
This comes up over to the side under Filter Results - City/Brand/Amenities etc when you have selected your city and dates.
Now whereas it doesn't necessarily prove that the property does not entertain pets, it does tell you the ones that do - so you can avoid calling them. Good luck.

That's incredible (the number of properties that accept pets)!!!
Keep in mind, just because a property accepts pets doesn't necessarily mean they will do anything special for your pet. One thing to note in mrwhipple13's bookmark, once you select a property you're interested in, it does mention "For additional information on pet-friendly amenities at Marriott, please contact our hotels directly."
It's been my experience that pretty much all Residence Inns are pet friendly.
