"Upgrade" to the same room category

Newbie here so apologies if there if this has been discussed before. The past four check-ins at Marriott properties I was warmly informed that I had been upgraded. When I asked what I was upgraded to it was exactly the same room type as on my reservation. Am I missing something here, or do agents assume that whatever pops up in the system is an upgrade?
