Cancellation Fee for Checking Out Early?!?!

Recently booked five rooms at the SpringHill Suites Mission Valley in San Diego for 11 nights.  We finished our job a day early and re-booked our flights to get home.  When I let the front desk know that we would be checking out ONE DAY early, I was told that they would have to charge me a cancellation fee for two out of the five rooms, for leaving early.  This was nothing that I have ever experienced before in my over 500 paid nights of staying at Marriott's.


Long story short, after going round and round with the manager, I was told that he wouldn't charge us the fee.  But he was making an exception and I should not expect that to happen next time. 


Thoughts?  I am familiar with the cancellation policy and don't agree that it should be applied to this situation.  Is this what I should plan/expect in the future?
