The Ultimate Fate of SPG Amex

Without a doubt, holding a branded credit card can help you earn free stays, status, upgrades, and other perks.  Countless Insiders have extolled these virtues across multiple posts.  Likely due to the Marriott/Starwood merge, there has been quite a bit of discussion about using the SPG Amex.  I’m guessing one of the biggest reasons is due to the current conversion ratio of Starpoints to Marriott Rewards points.  This card essentially earns 3 times the number of points as the Marriott Rewards credit card for the same amount of spending.  (Noted exception: This ratio becomes 6:5 when booking Marriott stays.) Multiple posts in this forum make reference to having and using the SPG Amex for its many benefits, and that’s great. But does anyone know what will happen to this credit card once the two rewards programs have merged?

A single rewards program is not likely to utilize two separate currencies.  And while none of us may know for certain, it is not entirely unreasonable to speculate that Starpoints will convert to Marriott Rewards points after the two rewards programs have merged.  It logically follows that if Starpoints no longer exist, it would not be able to earn them by using the SPG Amex.  Something would need to change.

I invite you to answer the question:

What do you think is the ultimate fate of SPG Amex?
