Pet Charges

I'm a hurricane evacuee from Florida, so I booked 2 nights this weekend at the Springfield Suites at Six Flags Atlanta. I called today just to make sure they would allow pets in this situation (I have a older well-trained and behaved Labrador Retriever). To my shock they said it would be a $250 charge, which is more than the 2 nights in the hotel. Being an SPG Platinum member crossover to Marriott Rewards, I like to know if this is it typical for hotels to do this in the Marriott chain? Seems a little unethical in this situation. I evacuated to a Residence Inn in Tampa last year and they only charged $75. (Also, I'm new to INSIDERS, so don't know if this is an appropriate question for this community...)
