I had planed to drive down the PCH on September 30th from Monterrey. Does anyone have latest news on how much of the route is open. Our next stay would be in Ventura. So should I give up the idea of using HW1 and use 101 instead?
From what I see, PCH is still closed at Big Sur. You can visit this website for the latest information: Highway 1 Conditions in Big Sur, California (bigsurcalifornia.org).
You may may be able to drive around the impass, but that surely would add hours to an already long drive. It is easily more than four hours from Monterey to Ventura via the 101.
Hopefully there will be significant progress within the next month. That is a really nice drive. Too bad to have to miss it.
As an aside, the Marriott in Ventura is a favorite of mine.
Thanks for the information. Can you recommend a scenic lunch (restaurant) stop on the 101 from Monterey to Ventura?
we did a CA coast drive (San Diego to Santa Cruz) last month with stays at the SLO Courtyard, SC Autograph, and Santa Ynez Marriott and a side trip to Hurst Castle on the way up and in Monterey on the way down. In SY I'd recommend the Hitching Post for a steakhouse - delicious but no views. In Santa Barbara, Arrigato is an amazing sushi place, or pretty much anywhere on the pier in SB. We didn't make any stops in Pismo but that would be a halfway point from your locations.
Big Sur is still closed, so you do need to take the 101 south until Paso Robles and then you can cut to the 1 from the 46 but that will add an hour-ish to your drive from that point on.
kevingill - good luck with this!
My only advice: how ever much time you plan to spend, consider budgeting more.... You can't imagine how often you'll want to stop and stare and shoot pics....
Here's some notes and pics from my drive last year:
Big Sur, Pacific Coast Highway, Monterey...
