Curious what everyone thinks about which is better between earning Marriott Reward Points or Airline Miles (assuming I have quite a bit of travel, mostly domestic but at least once a year, we travel internationally)
POINTS. Just in case that was not clear - POINTS!
Points value earnings is always superior in value to miles. One of the best points burn is to use the MR vacation/miles where one gets to convert some points into miles as part of the packaged deal. See Flight and Hotel Packages | Marriott Hotel Packages for details.
Using the CAT8 as an example (normally 40K points per night or 280K for 7 days), a 7-day package with 132,000 miles can be had for 360,000 MR points, an incremental cost of 80K points to get 132K miles. For 40K more MR points, one then reaches an 8th night on points which then triggers the "buy 4, get 5th night free" to extend the vacation to 10 days.
In summary - - 10 days vacation and 132,000 miles for 400,000 MR points.
Example vacation: Plugging in ORD (Chicago O'Hare) and SJO (San Juan, Costa Rica) and either the Hotel Punta Islita or the Los Suenos Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort as the venue choices, this takes 120K United miles for two business class round trip tickets and 10 days at the resort - and still have 12K leftover United miles. Can't beat this type of deal if willing to have a little travel flexibility to take advantage of the miles-savers fares on United. (This example based on 12/02 through 12/12 dates).
I thought the 5th night free was already factored in the 7 night package. Have you done this kind of redemption personally??
ks83 - The 5th night might be factored in when doing a 7-night package. More to my point was to extend to 10 nights for 40K more points since then I know you are getting 8 nights on points and 2 nights on the 4-for-5 deal. I have done this on every 7-night packaged vacation - extended to 10 days with one additional night on points.
Wow thanks. I will keep this is mind when I go to London in the next few years. It is one of the cities where you can spend 10 days.
Hopefully it would be available when the time comes - 2020 could be the year and I have enough points in my account.
I always choose points over miles! Wish I could get all my airlines to be Marriott partners so I could get MR points instead of miles when flying with them.
Points will yield the most benefits overall.
