Any recommendations for a first time visit?
I spent an afternoon at the California State Railroad museum and the Old Sacramento area - museum was pretty comprehensive on the history of the railroads out west and has a good collection of old trains and train cars. Old Sacramento is mostly shops and food but is nice for walking around and getting lunch or dinner.
Definitely visit the state capitol. They offer tours. Street parking might be available for a fee. Old town is nice too.
Just depends on what you'd like to do there!
I visited Sacramento for the first time in July, and it wasn't as boring as people make it out to be!
Where are you staying in town?
If you're into wine, there's a few wineries nearby, as well as a winery in town itself- definitely worth checking out.
Walking through the city/town area itself of an evening before the sun goes down is fairly peaceful and relaxing, there's a few bars to pop into and there's a row of museums in the downtown area worth having a look at.
Thank you for all the suggestions. We are staying at the Citizen Hotel.
Apologies for the delay in reply... Too much travel!
I also stayed at the citizen; treatment as a platinum wasn't fantastic, in fact, apart from the complimentary breakfast, there was not much to be had. I had to ask for a better room (the first was incredibly small), the welcome gift points never arrived, and the staff seemed fairly disinterred in helping. Having said that, it is a visually appealing hotel, I found the bathroom areas to be massive!
