Curious if any Insider has met him?
Marriott's longest-standing employee: A 79-year-old omelet maker - The Washington Post
Great story thanks .
I've had a few of Mr. Exum's omelets - tasty. We chatted for awhile (because you don't see many omelet makers approaching 80) and he actually knew the Hot Shoppes guy that hired me. He was as friendly as the article makes him out to be, with good reason; as a longtime profit sharing employee, he's doing very, very well thank you. He also will receive a fantastic benefit of joining the Quarter Century Club when/if he ever retires with free weekend stays (that's right free) at Marriott properties.
Marriott went public in 1953, I had a few employees who retired with thirty years back in the seventies, so they had been in profit sharing for about twenty or so years (back then companies were allowed to have one investment, their own stock - Enron, of course, changed that) and they retired as millionaires in 1970 type dollars - whoo boy.
Like erc I have had the pleasure of having one of Mr. Exum's omelets about 5 years ago. He was a most interesting person to talk with. There was a framed article back then at the omelet station that highlighted his service with Marriott. He made a mean omelet then and I'm sure he still does.
What a terrific story! Thanks etwhite for sharing! I found some of the commentary which followed the original article to be disheartening - some people can take issue with anything. This was a great, feel-good story! I would love to make the trip just for the lone purpose of having one of Mr. Exum's famous omelets.
What a fantastic story! Thanks so much for letting us learn about him!!!
Really great story, wonderful to see someone who is so respected and loved as Mr. Exum. Thanks Marriott for keeping him on the team.
May have to TIPPLE II just for the Omelettes!!
Awww thanks for sharing!!! What a great story and I enjoyed the style.
