Do I need to ask for room upgrade when I stay? I have only Been upgraded once without asking in all my stays?
There's been much discussion about this. Since "upgrades" are a defined benefit for both Gold & Platinum elites, you shouldn't have to ask, but some times you end up needing to do so.
Keep in mind, Marriott lets each property decide individually how they define an upgrade. Perhaps it's merely a higher floor with a better view, a preferred view, a larger standard room, a corner room, and in some cases, a suite of various sorts.
I consider it a bit of a game to see how good an upgrade I can haggle at the desk If I haven't already been upgraded in advance. I'll generally ask nicely if "it's possible to be upgraded to a 'larger' room" (without specifying a suite), and many times they comply.
My approach to checking in and getting the room I desire (and it varies based on who I am traveling with and how long I'm staying) is, "you snooze, you lose - you schmooze, you win". Remember an "upgrade" is defined very broadly (good view, high floor, concierge lounge floor, away from the elevator, near the elevator, etc etc etc - notice I didn't even mention square footage, which of course, is an upgrade).
The answer to your question as far as I'm concerned, is yes, you do have to ask...if you sense you're not headed where you want to go (meaning know the property from either previous stays or due diligence or through front desk conversation with an associate who, 95% of the time wants to make you satisfied).
Marriott upgrades....good training for life in general .
Do you use mobile check in or just check in at the hotel?
I believe in the concept of if you haven't been upgraded by the time you arrive at the property then ask, if you don't ask the answer is always.....NO!!
During our last stay in Chicago over Easter weekend I used the Mobile App to check-in and then while sitting at the airport waiting to board our flight I went back to the App then accessed the Chat part of it. Within a few seconds someone at the hotel was responding to which I requested an upgrade....shortly there after I got a reply that we'd been upgraded to a River View 1 BR Suite......yeah!
I use the mobile app to checkin more often than not. I haven't found this to be a detriment to being upgraded!
Well it depends on the brands. J W, Marriott Hotels and Renaissance brands always gives you an upgrade, I have never had to ask for it. . Not always a suite but sure a room with a view in a concierge floor. In other brands you need to ask for
it sometimes you get it others no. At last this is my experience. You have also to take into account that upgrades are based upon aivability.
