Can't Marriott afford a top notch web designer ? This site is clunky and not intuitively designed. It is all forms and no substance. Just like this Ask a question.
Marriott doesn't technically design the site. They probably have some options they can toy with, but it runs on the Jive platform. More likely than not, they use Jive for some sort of corporate communications, and their Jive rep said "yeah, we can make you a forum." and this is what we got.
I Speak Jive - Airplane! (5/10) Movie CLIP (1980) HD - YouTube
Airplane fans know that we'll need June Cleaver to help figure out what's being said, where. Since I'll never be able to find this post again, good luck in any upcoming card tournaments laketahoe.
It's too Facebook and not enough "Forum". try going back and finding a facebook post... forget it!
Of course this at least has a search feature. I do like a lot of the new things on here, but I don't think its a good platform for a forum.
"Clunky and not intuitively designed" is also how I feel (I used my first "others have this question", which is of course rhetorical, but I totally agree with your assessment).
I initially wrote off the sites challenges as being an old fart - but I haven't seen any mad dash of cyberskilled millennials rushing to the site (or the site's defense) either.
Not even concerned with the crapshoot of a sign in - sometimes it takes me right away, others I have to go through Marriott.com, others I go 0 for 4 trying everything. It seems I have discovered more surprises the more I use this site, as opposed to an effective learning curve - a couple examples:
Can't edit/Action a reply until you go back to the post (although I was able to with this one - so who knows - it's probably me)
Can't find the 4th post among Recent Activity (must use Load More) so a few posts fall between Recent and The Board
The Board of five adds only five more (only one additional click is allowed) and More Links only 5 more - tough luck finding anything else (yes, they have search, but it's just as weak as before regarding finding posts). The only thing saving me for now is the lack of posts which keeps the site pretty static, but if the site ever picks up like previous months, stuff will get lost pretty easily.
Where's the post - Travel/Rewards/Community Suggestions - holy cow
As I invest more and more learning this site's mechanics, I can only wonder how many potential contributors just give up and say the heck with it, costing us valuable travel and loyalty program insights (which goes to Zacky's thought about what Marriott actually wants to achieve with the site).
Ok, that will do for now -
If we happen to get some staff action at tipple 2 again (I hope so) I'd love to have a sit down with us and them and maybe discuss different platform options that may be better suited for forum discussions. It may fall on deaf ears, and they may be locked into a contract, who knows, but can't hurt to try.
Also, unrelated but has anyone heard anything about that new platform they told us about last tipple? I don't remember what it's called but I haven't seen any news or updates about it.
I was thinking about that the other day. I think pluto77 tested it. She might remember the name.
Yea, but it is more than just a webmaster. They need an IT overhaul.
The SSO implementation (Single Sign On) they have is horrid. The sessions should be passed seamlessly from one side to another (i.e. from marriott.com to marriottrewards.com) so that you do not need to log in again. This is basic late 90's functionality.
The fact that the iPhone app and Android app are on a different code base is mind boggling. If you have the right tools and app design, there should be 90+% shared code. There is no reason to stagger the release of one over the other.
