Is there any info available about options of the SPG Amex. Soon the programs will merge and AMEX will not allow any changes to the SPG card. Will Marriott work out an agreement to retain these card members with AMEX?
ie Marriott AMEX
I don't think there is any info out there yet about what Marriott may or may not do in regard to American Express. Chase is pretty powerful and that would be really something if Marriott had a Chase and American Express. My bet, and this is just a personal guess, is that Marriott will stick with Chase. SPG American express will go the way of Costco. A new Visa will be issued in the American Express' place.
RBC Capital Markets analyst Jason Arnold has been quoted in the financial press saying it’s virtually certain Amex will lose the account [Starwood]. Amex has lost a string of high profile co-brands in the past few years, including Costco Wholesale Corp., JetBlue Airways Corp., and Fidelity Investments.
While i may begin to sound like a broken record, I still have high hopes for the Marriott Rewards American Express card (a la Barclays American Airlines).
American express raised the sign up bonus for the SPG card (just like Barclay's did for the USAir card just before the end) though they aren't fighting for customers quite like barclays was (50k miles just for paying annual fee).
Like all things, we'll just have to wait, and see, and hope.
In addition to the increased signup SPG Amex bonus which just ended. Amex has been giving out 10,000 SPG points as retention offers pretty readily. There is a thread in Flyertalk on this. My wife was able to get one in fewer than 3 minutes (that awesome American Express Customer Service that is lauded). It sort of seems odd that Amex would do all this if they feel they had no chance to keep some sort of account.
Well IF they do cancel the SPG amex card, they will do ALL they can to get you to stick around. They'll turn them into another amex credit card (likely an everyday or everyday preferred). So if they give you a reason to stick around (like 10k bonus points) you're more likely to let them product change you, rather than cancelling your account altogether.
jsucool76,I am looking for some additional tangible reason beyond lounge access to keep my Amex Platinum (which I know isn't the subject of this thread per se). Help me justify my annual fee... I've had this card for 18 years, and don't want to let it go (which may be reason enough), but it sure seems I would be better off concentrating my spend on hotel and airlines cards. You are the expert - sell me man!
I go through the same thing with my platinum card every year. What ends up being the deciding factor is if they'll give me a retention bonus or not. They usually offer 20,000 points, or $200. Call up and see if they'll offer it to you. with the $200 credit, and then $200 airline credit, that leaves your AF at $50, (or potentially $150 depending on when your fee hits, and the new $550 annual fee), and to me, the lounge access is worth that. You're also local to a centurion lounge, so $50-$150 can totally be made back.
Other than that, the card is basically useless, in my opinion. and that is usually the spiel i give them every year for my retention bonus. I have the ritz card, the citi prestige, etc. So what makes the platinum card special. (PS. The answer is nothing) haha.
I just got approved for an SPG Amex last night. I figured why not get 25000 Starpoints ?!
