Staying a couple nights around LAX area next week an looking for Marriott property suggestions.
I recommend the Renaissance Hotel at LAX. You may want to check out this recent thread on the same topic.
jw99, I second vaboywnder's recommendation.
Renaissance Los Angeles Airport Hotel - A Wonderful Stay
Just booked the Renaissance on my phone. Thanks!
Good idea. I stayed there a couple of years ago, it was a good experience. I hope and expect you will have a nice stay.
jw99 We recently completed a 4-night stay at the LAX Renaissance and enjoyed our stay. Our only problem was an incorrect bill which was corrected by the front desk agent when I pointed it out.
I'm happy to see this hotel get so many good recommendations. Sadly, I don't feel the same about the LAX Airport Marriott - I stayed there a couple of times..a few years ago but I was not impressed. The "ren" is clearly better in my mind. And this is not the usual thing from my experience.
Thanks for all the tips and input. Checking in at LAX Renaissance tomorrow.
jw99, thanks for srarting this thread. I'm staying at the Ren on Fri night so I can catch an early flight to Mexico City. Sounds like the Ren was the right choice.
One question for the forum, Where do you catch the shuttle at LAX? I've read several posts saying the shuttle is good, but didn't see location. I was thinking Uber / Lyft might be better?
You catch the shuttle in the island outside the terminal where all the hotel shuttles and car rental shuttles pass. You must wave them down. According to information we had received from the hotel, the shuttle runs every 20-30 minutes. After waiting 28 minutes (at 10:30 pm), I called the hotel and was told we had 2 options: (1) catch the shuttle for the Sheraton which is right next door or (2) take a taxi and we would be reimbursed for the charge. We chose a taxi and arrived at the hotel in about 5 minutes. They immediately reimbursed us for the $17 charge and the tip. We also decided that we could have taken a shuttle to the Budget Car Rental lot which was right across the street and had passed with much greater frequency. When we were ready to return to the airport, we waited in the lobby for about 10 minutes and arrived at the terminal about 5 minutes later.
razorbackfan, thanks for the info on where to catch the shuttle. I'll let you know how it works as I'll try to use it this Fri.
Also, love the bicycle avatar.
razorbackfan is right about the location of the shuttle pickup outside of LAX. One important note is that the property next door to the Renaissance Hotel is a "Four Points by Sheraton" and those two properties share the same shuttle service.
The results are in! The LAX Renaissance was very, very good. I was upgraded to a suite without having to ask. Great Concierge Lounge. Only one restaurant with limited menu but it worked fine for a late dinner. The only "opportunity" for this property is figuring out how to get customers that one mile from LAX to their hotel. I jumped on the Budget shuttle and walked across the street to the hotel. The little things......
Glad to see it went well (thanks REN management and staff). I don't remember how big the restaurant menu was, but I remember having a good meal. Looks like they need to work on that shuttle, because surely they don't want that to be an issue...
Very good options already offered. I'd encourage you to stay near Marina Del Rey, an affluent neighborhood near (10 miles, <20min local traffic) LAX. There are two gorgeous, well equipped properties:
-Ritz Carlton Marina del Rey, and
-Marina del Rey Marriott.
The properties are closed to one another and offer direct access to the Marina and surrounding restaurants. Close enough to LAX without the business. You will feel you are in a chic California city. :-)
intltrojan, have you tried the Le Merigot in Santa Monica? That's my favorite when venturing away from LAX but still needing to be fairly close to the airport. It's not cheap, but probably no more expensive than the RC. We have stayed there on a stopover in LAX because it's got beach access and is right near the Santa Monica pier and some great shopping.
I did but found the property outdated compared to other JWs that I have been to. Maybe also back then I was not a Platinum and did not get the preferential treatment. Overall not a good ROI compared to the room/service and amenities that I have gotten. Access to SM is pretty incredible though.
Update on my recent visit to Renaissance at LAX. Shuttle was pretty easy to catch and was where Razorbackfan said it would be. Shuttle is a black van that holds about 12. You have to watch for it and wave at them when you see it. It's easy, just watch for it. i'll try to post a complete review of my recent trip on a separate thread.
jw99, I am also a big fan of the LAX Ren. It's a stylish hotel with great amenities. I'd highly recommend. Having said that, we have a pre-flight LAX stay coming up, and I found a very reasonable rate at the Westin LAX which looks quite nice. So I'm trying that one out this time to save a few bucks and try out my platinum status match at SPG.
