Gold Status Expectations?

I have Gold Status with Marriott which I believe comes with the benefit of a continental breakfast in the lounge. I recently stayed at the Tyson's Corner Marriott outside DC.  I was told this benefit is only during weekends and for platinum members. I had received this benefit during my last stay which was a month earlier. How is this policy implemented inconsistently? In general, I have had trouble getting gold benefits at Marriott properties. Moreover, it is embarrassing to request free breakfast at check-in especially if it is listed as a gold status benefit. It is even more embarrassing to get refused. What is the protocol regarding these benefits? Do I request them or is the front desk expected to offer them at check-in? This is the first year I received a gold status. I have spent between $60,000 and $75,000 this year on the Marriott Card and I can get better rewards card if my status is not honored. It is embarrassing to request breakfast especially if it is listed as a benefit that comes with gold status; it is even more embarrassing to get refused. Please let me know if the gold status does not include this benefit and if it doesn't, please remove it from your listed benefits. better still, please educate your front desk staff on what to offer guests at check-in.  Thanks
