While everyone else seemed absorbed with the festivities surrounding the historical inauguration of President Obama and headed to Washington DC this past January, we chose to travel the opposite direction for the Martin Luther King weekend to enjoy a romantic spa getaway at Wentworth by the Sea, a Marriott Hotel & Spa.

Located on the New Hampshire Seacoast near the Maine border and 3 miles from Portsmouth, we've had the opportunity twice during the 2008 summer to have lunch at Latitudes, an open air deck beside the Wentworth by the Sea Marina. Unable to book a night at this hotel because of lack of availability, we were finally able to reserve one night through the hotel reservations. Thanks to persistence and calling the hotel directly, we were able to book our arrival a day earlier to enjoy a two-night stay. Upon arrival we learned that the hotel had a full house hosting the 4th annual Winter Wine Festival including a wide range of wine tasting and culinary events that are open to hotel guests for a fee. (This is an annual event that the Wentworth hosts every weekend from the Martin Luther King weekend through Valentines/Presidents Day weekend.)

Wentworth accomodated us in the lavish Admiral’s Suite, room 601 situated on the top two levels of the center turret. The suite has period antique furnishings, a spiral staircase up to a second level with sweeping panoramic views of a seacoast landscape that was recently blanketed with nearly a foot of snow!  The second level has a sofa, chairs and TV console along with a table for 4, a mini-bar with sink, refrigerator and microwave.  Completely refurbished in 2003, the bathroom was finished in rose marble including a modern plate glass enclosed walk-in shower.

We enjoyed several dining venues including the Bubbles & Jazz Sunday Brunch in the Grand Ballroom, coffee and dessert in the Roosevelt Lounge and dinner in the Main Dining Room. The food and service was excellent. Overall, the hotel associates from the bellmen, Front Desk staff and housekeeping are so courteous and responsive.

The Wentworth Spa is full service with friendly and very highly trained staff. New Hampshire has very strict educational requirements for certification of massage therapists.

Every guest room is equipped with free internet wired access; wireless access is available in the lobby.

Our stay at Marriott’s Wentworth by the Sea was truly a memorable getaway and a "must try" when planning a trip to New England.
