A group of 6 of us are heading to San Fran for Labor Day weekend. We're looking for two things, a comfortable hotel in a great location, and some Drakes Bay oysters. Can you recommend?
San Francisco what a great city, the city itself is a great location for so many things. We prefer to stay at the Marriott Fisherman's Wharf which has always been a great spot for us each of the many time we have visited the city. Walking distance to all that is the wharf area, bay cruises, Alcatraz cruises, North Beach and the excellent dining, Chinatown and all of it's fun and not far from the Golden Gate bridge and getting into the wine country of Napa/Sonoma Valley. Union Square is only a long hilly walk or close to the cable car stops which is a must to ride while in town.
Such a fun city beautiful surroundings.
These are from Labor Day 2011, could be bright sunny and somewhat warm, but once the fog rolls in off the bay it gets bone chilling cold and windy. Have a great trip.
I like the San Francisco Courtyard at Fishermans Wharf a lot! The location is great. It is a five minute walk to the cable car and a 2 minute walk the opposite direction to the muni. Fishermans Wharf is also a 2 minute walk with Pier 39 being less than 10 minutes walk. The hotel is very comfortable. I have had rooms facing the street and the back of the hotel. The back of the hotel was quieter, but also liked the street view and the noise was not a problem. There are many bars and restaurants withing walking distance. For me, the restaurants in Little Italy were a big plus. They are about a 10 minute walk away. So...you don't need a car. You can either walk, or walk to public transportation easily. The bistro at the hotel offers a nice reasonable breakfast. Each time I have stayed here the staff have been very friendly and helpful. Here is a photo of my last room #408:
The hotel is very clean and comfortable and the location is great!
Totally agree with both of these experienced travelers!
Having stayed only at The Marriott FW, have walked by the CY, and it was also impressive. There is something special about just walking in that area. You will see a lot of fine places for your Oysters. Have always enjoyed Scoma's, Alioto's, (SP?) and of course Pier 39 places.
Don't forget to have an "Irish Coffee" at The Buena Vista Bar, it is memorable!
Take the advice for "Warm Clothes", even in August, you may just need them more than you think!
Spot on jerrycoin, Scoma's,...and my almost favorite bartenderette in the bay area, GG. An awesome spot to dine as well as just getting a crab from the crab vendors and taking it back to the room along with some In-N-Out burger for dessert! Alioto's, some of the best seafood in the wharf area for sure along with McCormick and Kuleto's at Ghiradelli Square.
Thanks for the verification on the spots to dine, I sometimes get places mixed up!
Don't forget a memorable "Chocolate shake" at Ghiradelli's! You can also get a nice one at Ghiradelli's in Chicago near Water Tower Place!
Chicago has this wonderful place to enjoy fantastic ice cream!
Once inside, place your order, and grab a table. The crowds can be huge.
Excellent info Jerry, not a big ice cream person either, but once in a while and Chicago looks as good as any place to dive in.
