We arrived yesterday afternoon for 7 days at the Marriott Waterfront, using points (part of a travel package). We were given a room on the 7th floor with a view of Elliot Bay and a balcony (Just big enough to stand on, no chairs). My Plat status was acknowledged and they explained that the CL was closed for the weekend. We will be using the CL Sunday evening thru Thursday evening.
Today happened to be the annual Chowder Cook-off, to raise money for the Seattle Propeller Club. For $5/person you get to sample clam chowder from 8 different restaurants along the waterfront. We signed up and gave them all a try. We had to have had at least 32 oz. of clam chowder (probably more) between all the restaurants. The Marriott restaurant (the Hook and Plow) was my winner. They deep fry the potatoes in duck fat and cut their own bacon. These items are both added when the chowder is served
Like Portland, Seattle is great walking town, if the weather is good. Yesterday was sunny in the high 70s and today was partly cloudy and 80. Probably a bit warm for the natives, but great to this Phoenix AZ resident. On the recommendation of the Concierge, we walked over to Queen Ann Hill to see the trees and flowers. Very pretty this time of year. On Wednesday we will be taking a Segway tour of Seattle. This is always a great way to see a city.
This morning while we were walking around Pioneer Square we passed the Courtyard. We went in to use the restrooms and then chatted with one of the front desk staff. He explained the building was originally a bank, and had been converted by Marriott. It was not as impressive as the Courtyard/bank building in San Diego, but still a nice repurposing of an old building.
Since this is the day before Mother's Day, Pikes Market was filled with flower vendors and filled with customers. We stopped at the local cheese maker and bought some smoked white cheese, then went over to a fish vender to buy some smoked salmon and finally to the fruit vendor to buy 2 very juicy and sweet pears. After we stashed everything in our in-room refrigerator, we walked (uphill, again) to the Ralphs and bought a six pack of Blue Moon beer. This evening we sat on the patio of the Marriott Trolley Café and had smoked salmon, cheese, pear and beer for dinner. We still have enough for another dinner later this week.
So far a very enjoyable stay in Seattle.
