Baseball in Japan

My other early interaction with baseball is through my high school study of Japanese. In Japan baseball is the most popular team sport. It is often assumed that baseball was introduced to Japan by American GIs in the aftermath of the second world war, but the sport has been popular in Japan since in 1870s, especially as a college sport; professional leagues only date from the 1920s. It did admittedly become bigger in scale (like most things in Japan) after the war when it was heavily promoted in Yomiuri Shimbun, the world's largest circulation paper, as a source of national entertainment and unity.
