I didn't play baseball for many years past the T-ball leagues. I must have been too slow with my hand-eye coordination. I liked the game, but I took a few hard body shots and began to fear the heavy ball. So my career did not last long.
However, but I did become a fan. Every morning I would open the newspaper to the sports section. And I would skip most of the sports stories and head straight for the baseball game statistics. I thought a lot about ERA, on base percentage, and the myriad number of other measurements of player performance. My love of numbers eventually grew into a Masters degree in mathematics and a career as a computer programmer.
