42 Story - A Brooklyn Yankees Fan!

Discussion created by kroywen on Mar 29, 2013

Back in the early 1950's, growing up in Brooklyn, NY, my husband was a definite "different" baseball fan.   Instead of agreeing with all his friends who were devoted Dodger fans, he chose to root for the Bronx Bombers -- the Yankees!!!      His ultimate baseball hero was Joe DiMaggio.

His father was a traveling sales rep (staying at Marriotts even then).  During one business  trip to New Orleans he was entertaining a client together with the owner of the Roosevelt Hotel.  During their meal, in walked The Yankee Clipper himself!   His father was introduced and told DiMaggio that even though he & his family lived very close to Ebbets Field, his son made him take him to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx to see him play.

That's when DiMaggio took one of the menus and wrote on the back of it:     "To Martin, a Real Fan"  and signed it.     When my husband's friends saw the autograph, they never teased him again about being a rebel..   In fact he even made some Yankee converts!

Here's a copy of that cherished menu from June 6, 1951:
