Meet Asheville, NC: The southern city won the Hometown Highlights contest and the hearts of Insiders

Insider ab60811 won our Hometown Highlights contest with Asheville, NC. And after reading comments and posts from the community, it’s clear that this southern city has won the hearts of a few Insiders, too.

Asheville is one of nukeferret’s “favorite places.” The Renaissance Asheville Hotel downtown is “great,” he says, and the area offers “so many great [restaurants].” He recommends Early Girl, walking distance from the hotel, for breakfast, 12 Bones Smokehouse for a lunch of “ribs basted with blueberry chipotle sauce” and Vincenzo’s Ristorante & Bistro for dinner. “Get there early, grab a table in the bar and eat there,” he says. “They usually have live music.”

Jerrycoin says “there is a lot to do in this most interesting town,” including Woolworth Walk, a downtown art gallery featuring local artists and housed in the historic F.W. Woolworth Building complete with an old-fashioned soda fountain. Jerrycoin also has plenty of dining recommendations.

Tjcnewyork would “go back to Asheville in a heartbeat” and, like the others, has a few dining favorites of his own, including Red Stag Grill at the Autograph Collection’s Grand Bohemian Hotel. The hotel is “quaint and charming,” he says, and “looks and feels like a German inn straight out of the Brothers Grimm.” Of course there’s more than just food in Asheville. Tjcnewyork says Vanderbilt Castle “is a must-see…It’s immense and you can spend a whole day there.” He also recommends the Basilica of St. Lawrence, “a beautiful soaring space” where “the nave of the basilica has the largest freestanding elliptical dome in North America.”
