Taking a poll about what you prefer earning with Marriott Rewards promos?Free
I think it's important to add in balance here. Though I voted points I was quite happy with the free nights cat1-5 cert because it was easy to get. Stay twice, get a free cat1-5 cert is far more valuable to me and my travel patterns than stay 10 nights get 10,000 points...
ditto - i prefer the stay twice, get a free cat 1-5 cert also.
by value, cat 1-5 cert worth from 7,500 up to 25,000 points but it is becoming more difficult to find a property under cat 6 to use the certificate.
I find free nights of marginal value. They way my wife likes to travel, we are always picking cat 7+ properties and those are typically not included.
How about a promotion without any exclusions or exceptions. No details button to click on.
For instance, two points per dollar charged to your credit card at any Marriott affiliated property worldwide, after the first 500 dollars.
Yes, including taxes, resort fees, parking charges, spa treatments, meals, etc.
Have to agree with brightlybob; balance is important. Although accumulating points is my "primary" goal (as retirement keeps getting closer all the time, which is when I plan to utilize the vast majority of points), the free night has made it nice for the wife and I to get away for those extended 4 day weekends, which is also well worth it to me. I am happy with either - just that for my particular situation, points is slightly preferred. But I'd be a fool to turn down a free night if I can get it.
I like a good balance but I prefer the elite nights until I hit LIfetime Platinum as the bonus points are easier to earn through a variety of ways.
Points provide more options and I do not have to hunt down a Cat 1-5 property in the place that I'm going. Usually I can find them without issue, but with the points I can choose any property as long as I have the points. Now, if the promos change with ones that provide higher Cat certs, depending on what the qualification criteria is, my answer may change.
@rle I was originally thinking that, but now that rewards stays count as elite nights, when you use your points for stays, they turn into elite qualifying nights. Then, you can stay at a bunch of Cat 1 and 2 hotels and get lots of nights without paying.
category inflation is real, so certs are less attractive than they otherwise would be...
I think what isn’t being considered here is how easy it is to get these certifcates. For the Fall one I had 2 1-night stays costing $90/nt, $180. I’m redeeming it at Double-TIPPLE for the next door Residence Inn saving $190. Yes, there’s a lower number of cats 1-5 but theres still thousands of places to redeem them at. I’ve never found any problem using them saving well in excess of $100. It’s a good return on the minimal commitment. I would be happy to see these continued 2-stays-for-a-cert-more-for-points promos...
I prefer the free points. As some of the other respondents have noted, the free night is for a Category 1-5 hotel. As I reviewed the Marriott Hotel Directory, this free night can not be used in cities like New York. The free points adding into my accumulating account gives me more options. Specifically, adding free points allows me to use points, not only for hotels, but airlines as well and, if I maximize my options, I take travel packages.
As I am approaching retirement, I am hoping that the free points promotions will help me achieve lifetime Gold or Platinum prior to that time. When paired with my existing Platinum status they are adding up faster.
I wouldn't mind free nights if the category went a little higher than 5 AND they didn't have expiration dates. Points are the most flexible. Sometimes I'm willing to stay at a Cat 1 if I want to maximize points, but sometimes I like splurging and spending a ton of points on a single night somewhere great.
I prefer the points because at the end of the day, Lifetime status is truly the goal (until you reach it) and usually nights always come before the points do.
randyram06, but you can use 7,500 points at a level one and get a night credit towards your lifetime as well. Unless the points bonus are super low, the points may give you even more nights if used wisely than the certs. This gives you double towards lifetime as well because lifetime is a combo of points and nights. I'm there on nights, but I still need points for my lifetime. If you get the free night cert, it only helps on nights, not points. Just my thoughts.
Depends on the individual. If one has more LT nights in relative to LT points, they would probably prefer points and vice versa (OR even impartial to LT).
Not sure if this has been done before (as i'm still relatively new), but it would be nice to have promotions where you can choose your promo reward to what best suits your needs.
alwweb : That is a great way to play the game! Thanks and I know there are lots of people here that this would work awesome for, but I am in the boat where I have enough nights for lifetime gold and will have my nights for lifetime platinum within a year or 2, but I just recently earned enough points for the lifetime silver...so I'm in the get as many points as possible mode! The nights aren't hard because of the work travel, the points are just lacking.
What is the difference between nights and elite nights?
I assume Free Nights mean earning night certificates that you can use towards a stay while Elite Nights would count toward status (and lifetime).
I prefer the flexibility of points. Would not mind free nights either, but did not like the expiration date that came with the last megabonus.
Right now I'd prefer the elite nights so i can get to Lifetime Platinum. I'll get the 2M points before I reach the 750 nights.
I prefer a free night but wouldn't it be great that we could add the certificate cat 1-5 to a stay and put it with a hotel stay that's a cat 6 or higher by paying a nominal fee or that portion in points?
So let's say I want a cat. 6 i'd pay 25$ on top of my certificate and a cat.7 would be 50$ more..and you could pay that in extra points also??
I understand that most top end properties..cat.8 and soon 9 would be a lot more expensive but the value in points(25000)MR points could be deducted from the total if you are on a rewards stay?!
This would still be valueable while not needing to alter your stay pattern. It would just be added to the certificate at time of booking for stays?
I prefer Elite nights. I feel they are much are harder to accumulate, because Platinum will receive the 50% increase in points, which are easier to use on the rooms. But are flexible enough to transfer to miles if I choose. But I think it really depends on what kind of traveling you do and how often.
What is a free "Elite" night?
I am assuming it's something along the lines of: "We will double every night in terms of elite credit." (this being Marriott it would probably be starting with a second, or even third, stay)
My problem with free nights is that they would likely be capped at Category 5.
zooanimal - Free Elite night refers to you getting a night towards elite status and lifetime status.
With most polls here struggling to get to 100 votes, it is astonishing this one has reached 780! That’s getting statistically relevant and with just 3 options voted on it’s interesting to see that all have been chosen in some numbers, although the plurality of voters have chosen points, there’s no majority!
We're suffering from "poll fatigue."
You should start a poll to poll if people are suffering from poll fatigue...
Sorry, I don't play that game. I know of one former Insider who created such a poll to make a point.
Is it time to do something about Insider polls?
I'll let you judge the effectiveness of his attempt.
