Majority of the time I make reservations online by myself, but sometimes I have gone through a travel agent. There have been a couple of times where, when travelling internationally, the travel agent has found better fares that I could online (other times it was the reverse).
Also, sometimes airlines will not allow you to connect to other airlines via their websites so that has to be done via a travel agent or third party website (for example, even though Ethiopian is part of Star Alliance through their website nor in their office can they connect to a United flight, also a Star Alliance member, all on one ticket. This has to be done either through a travel agent or a site like orbitz)
Finally, some airlines will only provide a certain route and certain partners through their website but the travel agent can look for additional partners and connections -- we have had this experience with Emirates as online they only provide certain partners and connections whereas the travel agent had more options.
The only downside to booking with a travel agent is that usually you cannot make changes to the reservation --- only the agent is allowed to make any changes.
If you.book online you have to do your home work. Check all sites and keep checking on pricing
When they drop most time they change it
Before computer's I always used travel agents I always found someone in the same hotel played
Less then me or the room I picked had a mix up I've been doing my own bookings since computer's

Looking forward to hearing what the rest of the community has to say.
I voted on line; but since I am a lifetime Platinum I always look on line at Marriottrewards.com and if it just a one night stay I usually just book on line. If I have trouble getting what I believe is reasonable I will then I cll the Platinum Reservation line. I have had a recent occasion when on my way through Albuquerque I got a great rate going but about $25 more for the same rate coming home. The Platinum line could not get that lesser rate so I booked another Marriott Property in the area. On my way through I asked the front desk person when I checked out if they could give me the same lesser rate on my return. They did right on the spot. That was the first time I was unsuccessful with the Platinum Line. I am not saying they don't do a good job because for years they have done a great job for me. i am saying that if you are polite and not demanding the persons at these locations like to help you. i was extremely happy with the Marriott in Albuquerque for not only giving me the great rate twice, but a fantastic upgrade room on my second visit
